Description
Evening primrose is a versatile plant with many medicinal and culinary uses.
The seeds can be cooked in spiced baked goods or roasted in the oven or sprinkled as an alternative to black pepper. Evening primrose is a unique plant in that the flower opens in the evening and withers during the day. The seed contains a variety of amino acids including lysine, proline, aspartic acid, tyrosine, glycine, leucine, glutamic acid and serine.
The active constituent in evening primrose represents one of the highest sources of GLA. This essential fatty acid is found in many areas of the body including breast milk and the brain.
Common medicinal uses include: the treatment of premenstrual syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, dermatitis, mastalgia. Used in cosmetics as a skin softener, to restore health to brittle hair and nails.
