Gymnema is a slow-growing perennial, a woody climber found in central and southern India and tropical Africa.
In the Ayurvedic system where Gymnema has been used for thousands of years, it is referred to as “Gurmar”, meaning "destroyer of sugar", as it temporarily inhibits sweet receptors on the tongue and also regulates blood sugar. It also has the ability to reduce sugar cravings, with associated anti-obesity and anti-diabetic properties.
Also used to treat stomach aliments, constipation, liver disease, gout and rheumatoid arthritis, with antibacterial and antiviral properties.
