Its purple-red berries are described as having five tastes: sweet, salty, bitter, pungent and sour.
This berry is also sometimes Five Flavour Fruit, and it’s not hard to guess why. Because of it’s complicated and pungent flavours, it’s not typically used in cuisine.
It does however have a long history of use in Chinese medicine and throughout the rest of Asia. It’s believed to have benefits to lung and heart health, and is commonly used to treat stress, depression and even Alzheimer’s disease.
