Witch hazel leaves and bark are most commonly used to make astringent preparations, which have been taken internally for diarrhea and used externally as a rinse or gargle for mouth and throat infections. There are many species of witch hazel, but Hamamelis virginiana -- a type of shrub native to North America -- is most commonly used. The leaves and bark are made into teas and ointments.
